The main theme of his works is the relationship
between the modern alone person and the death and the others. His novels refuse
the existence of a <common life>: the job, house and friends, but it is
also what his characters want to have and they cannot reach. For them, the end
of the way is the death. Therefore, the resignation is <the feeling which
precedes the liquidation>. His protagonists need to see their life going to
borderline situations- wars, bullfights and hunt- to feel alive, but in the
search they are condemned to the self-destruction, which sometimes includes
destroying others. Moreover, the characters are in need of love because, in
general, they have lonely and injured lives, and they try to hide their vulnerability
with a cap of pride, indifference or cynicism. But Hemingway provides intense
movements where his protagonists experiment positive feelings such as
tenderness, fraternity, passion or happiness, although in the end is the death
who win the game.
